What to do and what to see!

SETTING THE SCENE

Causeway Cottage lies to the west of the village of West Buckland, Somerset, close to the Somerset/Devon border, and equidistant from the north coast of Somerset/Devon and the coast of Devon/Dorset to the south - both coasts 20-25 minutes away. About 3 miles from Wellington, and 7 miles from Taunton, Causeway Cottage is easily reached, and is within one minute from Junction 26 on the M5 motorway. A good stopover on the way to or from Cornwall. Please note that Robert will gladly help plan day trips, as he has an extensive knowledge of the South West.

Somerset and Devon, in the south west of England, have an equitable climate with warm summers and mild winters, and are situated in a beautiful part of Britain. Within easy reach by motorway, these counties, which lie at the gateway to the West Country, nevertheless have a quiet rural setting with attractive scenery and many beaches. Outdoors there are many country walks and Exmoor and Dartmoor are within easy reach.

Knighthayes Gardens

Gardens of Knightshayes Court

There are also many other National Trust and English Heritage properties in Somerset, and some famous 'natural attractions' such as Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury Tor and Exmoor National Park. And of course all located within the villages, towns, coast and countryside that gives Somerset its special character.

Cothay Manor Gardens

Cothay Manor, a 15th century medieval manor, is open, by appointment, for group visits. One of Somerset’s finest historic houses, Cothay is surrounded by twelve acres of magically romantic gardens that are open to the general public

Barrington Court Stable Garden

Barrington Court Stable Garden, The house is also open to National Trust visitors. The stable block dominates the formal garden. This was created in the 20th century to plans by Gertrude Jekyll. The garden is laid out as a series of 'outdoor rooms' within the brick walls of the Elizabethan cattleyards. The flower beds in the Lily Garden, Rose Garden, Iris Garden and White Garden still reflect Miss Jekyll's original colour schemes. In the working kitchen garden there are espaliered apple, pear and plum trees trained along the high brick walls.
